24 hours with… Wilhelmina Shrimpton

The Newshub reporter reveals her beauty routine and makeup must-haves.

Morning

The first thing I do in the morning is jump in the shower to wake myself up.

Every morning I use a Neutrogena Deep Clean Cleanser to wash my face, a part from one day a week where I switch to a Nivea Gentle Exfoliating Scrub.

To keep the skin on my body nice and smooth I like to lather up with a Swisse Sea Salt Body Polish. It has hints of citrus in it, which some how makes me feel a little more energised!

I don’t wash my hair every day, but when I do I use Redken All Soft shampoo and conditioner.

I then towel dry my hair, and spritz through some Redken Pillow Proof Primer.

Because I use GHDs every day my poor hair needs all the protection it can get, so I rub through a bit of Keratase Ciment Thermique.

I usually work quite long hours, and need to be camera ready the whole time, so I swear by MAC Pro long wear foundation, and MAC Mineralise Skinfinish powder. It always looks just as good at the end of the day, as when I first applied it.

I always make sure to use a good primer as well. Right now I’m loving Nude by Nature’s Airbrush Mineral Primer.

To add a bit more dimension to my look I use MAC Mineralise skinfinish bronzing powder, and a MAC Extra Dimension Skinfinish in Beaming Blush. It has a beautiful gold pigment in it, which adds so much warmth to my face.

My hand bag is packed full of products, because I never know where a story will take me and for how long. I have a little “go bag” full of travel sized minis. At the moment I’ve got a range of Trilogy products like their Cream Cleanser, Vital Moisterising Cream and Everything Balm.

My mum taught me about the wonders of Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream, so I’m always sure to have a tube handy.

I’ve also usually got about 15 lipsticks and glosses at the ready. My collegaues always laugh at me when they see how many are jammed in the side pockets of my handbag. They’re a mixture of MAC, YSL and L’Oreal. Mostly nudes and pinks, my favourite at the moment are two MAC ones – Modesty and Twig.

When going from day to night I’m all about adding a little bit of drama. For me that comes from brows and a bright lip.

When it comes to brows I can’t go past Benefit. I use three of their brow products. Firstly the Precisely, My Brow Pencil to add more definition and shape. I then add a bit more colour with the Brow Zings powder, and to finish it off, I use a lick of Ready, Set Brow – it’s pretty much a hairspray for your eyebrows.

When it comes to lips bright is best at night. I love Ruby Woo, Lady Danger, Morange and Girl About Town all by MAC.

For nights out I’ll always include those added extras, like a pair of false eyelashes for a bit more drama around the eyes. I love the GLAM by Manicare lashes in Jessica – they’re just so easy to apply!

To complement the lashes I’ll do a smokey eye. I have dark brown eyes so I love using copper/nude/brown tones. My favourite is the In the Flesh MAC x15 palette.

I also love to have a glowing tan when I go out. Like many of my friends, it makes me feel a lot more confident. I use Bondi Sands or St Moriz tanning mousse in medium.

I’ve also recently started going to the lovely girls at Sun Kissed Tan in Meadowbank, so if I’ve got time before an event I’ll head out there. If time is on your side, you can get an 8 hr developing tan, or if you’re running a bit behind I go for their 2 hour.

When it comes to hair lately I’m really into a sleek look. Either a centre-part with a low bun, or I’ll wear my hair out. Straightened, back combed and sleek at the sides … think Kendall Jenner. They’re quick and simple styles that can easily be achieved with a bit of dry shampoo and A LOT of hairspray. I use Batiste Dry Shampoo, and Redken Forcefull 23 Hairspray.

The one product I couldn’t do without for a night out would be a beautiful pair of lashes. I never wear falsies during the day, so for me I always associate them with getting glam.

I use Glam by Manicare. My favourite ones are the Jessica lashes. They give my lashes both a bit more length and a bit more volume, because who doesn’t love a little drama on a night out?

Evening

I always take my make up off before bed. At night time I wash my face with Estee Lauder Advanced Night Micro Cleansing Foam. I then use Garnier Miceller Wipes and Miceller Water to get rid of any excess make up.

I then apply Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair serum to my face and neck, followed by L’oreal Revita-lift Laser X3 serum and anti-aging moisturisor. I finish it all off with a bit of Nivea Q-10 eye cream.

For my body I’ll use Body Shop Body Butter in Mango or Papaya.

I’ve definitely gotten into more of a routine than when I was younger. I’ve also learnt that healthy, glowing skin starts from within so I try to eat plenty of fresh healthy foods, and drink lots of water.

I’m way more vigilant now with sunscreen. It’s so important to protect you skin from those harsh UV rays, especially in New Zealand. Naturally I’m very pale, so I burn easily. I now get into the habit of “chain sunblocking” when I’m outside in summer (applying every 30 minutes or so). My friends laugh .. but it works!!

I can’t say no to a full body massage. Work can be high pressure and I’m always delivering to deadlines so it’s nice to unwind. I love the massages at East Day Spa, they’ve got such a beautiful and calming set up.

I adore a good facial as well. I recently had my first Microdermabrasion treatment at Caci in the Viaduct. My skin felt so smooth, and my make up went on beautifully afterwards. I’m thinking about making it a regular thing, particurly in the lead up to my wedding next summer.

I’m lucky enough to get my hair cut and coloured by the gorgeous make up team at Three. They really look after all of us at Newshub, and not only do they work miracles, but they’re also our friends!

I get my eyebrows shaped and tinted at Benefit in Ponsonby, but I’m looking at getting them feather-touched next month which I’m very excited about.

My celebrity beauty icon would have to be say Bella Hadid. She’s got a beautiful natural look, she’s always glowing, and really knows how to own that nude colour palette.
